Neighbours scored huge numbers for its heart-wrenching finale, as millions of people tuned in to say goodbye to their favourite characters on Ramsay Street.

The final episode of the beloved soap aired last night in the UK on Channel 5, as stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce returned to the soap that made them household names.

The show’s swansong boasted 2.5million viewers, it’s been reported, with a peak of around 3m people watching as the programme drew to a close after its axe.

The final episode saw the soap pay homage to the support its received from fans over the past 37 years, as it aired a special hour-long programme.

Mike Young (Guy) and Jane Harris (Annie Jones) took a trip down memory lane during in a nostalgic storyline, while Toadie (Ryan Moloney) tied the knot with Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowden).

Elsewhere, Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) reunited with his soulmate Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou), while Margot made a special cameo to return as Donna Freedman, with her character making a brief appearance over Zoom.

Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne) had the perfect words to describe the cherished street, after being tasked with completing the new and improved History of Ramsay Street.

Fans were in buckets of tears as Susan said: ‘How do you begin to describe a street? Do you talk about the houses? the bricks and the mortar? The gardens and the trees? Or do you talk about the people? The young and the old, and everyone in between?’

She continued: ‘Everyone deserves a place in the history of Ramsay Street. Even those who watched us from afar,’ in what appeared to be a direct nod to Neighbours’ dedicated fans around the world.

Susan concluded by saying: ‘Together, we have been the perfect blend,’ before the credits roll to reveal a message that read: ‘Thank you for loving us. We love you!’
